Turn an existing physical part, legacy drawing, photo, or incomplete file into clean, editable CAD. FluidWorks provides reverse engineering CAD services for replacement parts, discontinued components, upgrades, prototypes, and products that were never properly documented.

From the part you have to the files you need

Every job begins by identifying the information available and the accuracy the final part requires. Useful starting material can include a physical sample, caliper measurements, photographs with known dimensions, marked-up drawings, STL data, or an existing STEP file.

  • Parametric SolidWorks part models
  • Assemblies and fit relationships
  • Dimensioned manufacturing drawings
  • STEP, STL, DWG, DXF, and PDF exports
  • Updates to legacy or non-editable models
  • Replacement-part documentation

When reverse engineering is useful

This service is a practical fit when a machine or product needs a replacement component but no usable drawing exists, when an old file must become editable again, or when a hand-built prototype needs to become a repeatable manufactured part.

How the process works

  1. Review the source material. Send photos, measurements, files, or a description of the available part.
  2. Define accuracy and deliverables. We identify critical dimensions, interfaces, tolerances, and final file formats.
  3. Rebuild the model. The part is recreated with an organized, revision-friendly SolidWorks feature tree where the source allows.
  4. Check and release. You review key dimensions before the agreed native, neutral, and drawing files are delivered.

Manufacturing comes first

A reverse-engineered model is only useful if it supports the next real-world step. Material, machining or fabrication method, mating parts, wear, and intended use are considered when preparing the final geometry and drawings.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a 3D scan?

No. Many mechanical parts can be recreated from careful measurements, clear photographs, sketches, or an existing sample. Complex freeform surfaces may require scan data or additional measurement work.

Can you convert an STL into editable SolidWorks geometry?

Often, yes. The best method depends on mesh quality, part complexity, and whether the goal is simple manufacturing geometry or a fully parametric reconstruction.

Can you create a production drawing too?

Yes. A dimensioned drawing can be included when the manufacturer or project requires one.
